This course will cover major topics and themes in organic synthesis. The course will begin with an overview of the importance of small molecule total synthesis, as well as a review of organic structure and reactivity, then will take an in-depth dive into the syntheses of important classes of molecules including the beta-lactams, steroids, and sugars. Later modules will address important topics including stereoselective synthesis, medicinal chemistry, biosynthesis, bioinspired (or biomimetic) synthesis, and polymer synthesis.

This course will utilize a mix of freely-available online textbooks, ebooks that are accessible through IU libraries, and the primary literature (including reviews). The course will be divided up into eight 2-week modules, and each module will have its own materials.
